All with the right to rule the Alton Domain were dead, save Kennard's unborn son. Lady Bruna swore to serve as Regent, to protect her brother's widow and child, and command the Guards in Thendara until the boy was old enough to take up the duties himself.
Legend of Lady Bruna Darkover edition by Marion Zimmer Bradley Literature Fiction eBooks
This legend is often referred to in many of the Darkover books. It details the story behind the legend. In some long forgotten time, but when the family names were still known, the Altons still commanded the Guards.
The rest of the story tells of how Lady Bruna protected her sister in law after her husband, Lady Bruna's brother, died in battle against the other two families within the Alton House. By taking her, with her consent, as a freemate, Lady Bruna protected her and her unborn child and held command of the Guards until such time as Margali's son should come of age.
It shows some of the intricate formalities that could actually allow this to happen, if applied properly. It is interesting to see how they worked to solve the problem as they saw it.

Legend of Lady Bruna Darkover edition by Marion Zimmer Bradley Literature Fiction eBooks Reviews
Story line is OK but it doesn't hold one's attention as most of her writing does. I wouldn't read it again.
once again too short not my type of read though bradley is still a favorite author of mine. books should take more than a few minutes to read
Very short story; not a book. Don't waste your money. And I love reading Marion Zimmer Bradley's works.
Marion Zimmer Bradley wrote this short story about two women who make a marriage of necessity in 1979. Though brief, the theme of struggle against oppression and narrow-mindedness comes through clearly and is not dated. It is worth the dollar.
Way to short to be called a book. reads very much like a historic text from the old testament. I was left wondering what it was written for.
Short story covers a minor gap in the Darkover culture and series. I LOVE this series, just can't get enough. And hope Deborah Ross can keep it going. Deborah's not QUITE as creative, imaginative or as good a writer as MZB on Darkover, but near enough genuinely to enjoy.
This is a fitting example of MZB's genius at work. This is just a side note to a main storyline, but the story is rich with the kinds of non-sexual love that can be felt between two women, and the ways in which a strong woman (or two!) can make and leave her (their) mark(s) on the world. I will always love MZB's work, no matter how many times I read her stories.
